Pozývame vás na víkendovku s Davidom Moskowitzom, certifikovaným stopárom a dobrodruhom z USA. Podelí sa so svojimi skúsenosťami z rôznych krajín o tom, ako nájsť a porozumieť aj tie najskrytejšie znaky činnosti zvierat v prírode, či miesta, kde hľadať aj tých najplachejších tvorov. Predstaví nám na umenie stopovania a pozorovania zvierat v prirodzenom prostredí tak, aby bolo nielen vzrušujúcim zážitkom, ale malo hodnotu pre výskumnú činnosť. Je členom Cybertracker network, ktorá vychádza z filozofie a skúseností domorodých stopárov a organizuje školenia po celom svete, pričom kladie dôraz na individuálne schopností a rozvoj zručností a každého účastníka.

Zraz účastníkov bude na Borovej Sihoti v piatok večer 21.9. o 19h. Krátky úvod a predstavenie Davida je hneď večer. Kurz začína v sobotu o 8.30 - celý deň a večer v teréne, neskôr diskusia, slideshow, skúsenosti Davida. Nedeľa od skorého rana v teréne približne do 14-15h, kedy je návrat účastníkov. Cena kurzu za dva dni je €30, pre členov SWS €25. Ubytovanie a strava je na vlastné náklady, možné v kempe/hoteli Borová Sihoť. Ak máte záujem, kontaktujete nás e-mailom čím skôr, keďže počet miest je obmedzený. Podmienkou pre účasť je prihlásenie a zaplatenie poplatku na účet SWS najneskôr do 19.9.2012. Under the auspices of the Ministry of the Environment of the Slovak Republic and with support from Alertis - fund for bear and nature conservation within the project "Providing the Tools to Improve Brown Bear Management in Slovakia" we are organising another expert workshop on 21-22 June in order to continue the process of searching for collective solutions to these issues.

Malá Fatra National Park administration in cooperation with Fatranský spolok are organising brown bear monitoring in Malá Fatra on 1-3 June 2012. In case of bad whether or insufficient numbers of participants, alternative dates are 15-17.6.2012. Those interested who have experience or who took part in previous years (2003-2011) can register their interest at this address: monitoring@malafatra.org. Under the auspices of the Ministry of the Environment of the Slovak Republic and with support from Alertis - fund for bear and nature conservation within the project "Providing the Tools to Improve Brown Bear Management in Slovakia" we are organising another expert workshop. After the success of the first and second workshops with professor Alistair Bath in 2011, when different interest groups began to address key issues of bear management in Slovakia, we are meeting again on 2-3 February in order to continue the process of searching for collective solutions to these issues.

January-February 2012

Following the success of last year's "White Wilderness", which was featured among National Geographic Adventure Magazine's "25 Best New Trips", we are continuing this vital work in 2012. The project brings together international volunteers and local people, nature conservationists, foresters, landowners and hunters. Under the close supervision of experienced project staff, volunteers track wolves and lynx and collect samples for DNA analysis, which will allow us to determine the minimum number of animals in the area as well as to detect changes which could require urgent intervention. November 2011

On Saturday 12 November at 19.00 Dr. Seth Wilson will give a talk on "Reducing Conflicts with Bears" at Horolezecká chata in Horný Smokovec. Dr. Wilson is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and Research Associate with the Northern Rockies Conservation Cooperative. His research and applied efforts focus on large carnivore conservation, policy and human-wildlife conflict. He is currently working on a multi-year research project involving a community supported conservation plan to reduce human-grizzly bear and wolf conflicts and bear mortality on private agricultural land in Montana. During the evening there will also be a chance to see our "Bears and Us" exhibition.

There will also be a lecture by researcher Seth Wilson on the coexistence of people with bears and wolves on Tuesday 15.11.2011 at 14:00 in the SLDK multimedia room in the Forestry Faculty of Zvolen Technical University.

October 2011

Under the auspices of the Ministry of the Environment of the Slovak Republic and with support from Alertis - fund for bear and nature conservation within the project "Providing the Tools to Improve Brown Bear Management in Slovakia" we are organising two further expert workshops. After the success of the first workshop with professor Alistair Bath in July, when different interest groups began to address key issues of bear management in Slovakia, we are meeting again on 10-11 October in order to continue the process of searching for collective solutions to these issues. The third seminar is on the subject of "Implementation and work of an emergency team for solving urgent conflicts between bears and humans". The seminar will be led by professor Djuro Huber from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Zagreb. He will be presenting his more than 30 years' of experience in research and management of large carnivores firstly in theoretical discussions on Wednesday 12.10.2011 and then next day with practical demonstrations.

June 2011

The 9th annual brown bear monitoring in Malá Fatra will be held at the beginning of summer. This is the only activity of its type in Slovakia, which has been running without interuption since 2003. During this period it has brought much interesting information, which adds to data obtained from other methods (e.g. camera traps). Contact: Michal Kalaš, správa NP Malá Fatra a Fatranský Spolok.

September 2010

On Thursday 23 September at 19.00 Gregg Losinski of the Idaho Department of Fish & Game will be giving a presentation at the Horolezecká chata in Horný Smokovec on "Bringing back the grizzlies of the Yellowstone Ecosystem and learning to live with them." Gregg, who has family roots in Štrba, is a Regional Conservation Educator and works with grizzly bears in the Yellowstone area. During the evening there will also be a chance to see the "Bears and Us" exhibition.

On the weekend of 4 and 5 September our "Bears and Us" exhibition will be on display at the St. Hubert Days hunting festivities at the manor house in Svätý Anton. This year marks the 20th jubilee of this popular annual event.

August 2010

7-8 August will again be "Bear Days" at Hrebienok in the High Tatras. Each day from 10:00 till 16:00 there will be various fun programmes (draw a bear, the bear in the container, bear sling, bear den, bear skill, bear signs, bear strength, bear cuisine, brothers of the bear), as well as new attractions for the 3rd year of the event: the bear cableway and bear run. A fascinating exhibition about bears awaits along with "live" and stuffed bears, as well as theatre performances by the amateur theatre from Palárikova. Visitors with names or surnames beginning with Med (Honey) or who live in Medveďov get a 50% discount on a return ticket on the furnicular railway to Hrebienok. In addition, every child with a teddy bear will receive a "bear gift"!

Following the huge success of "Meeting the Bear", which was seen by around 20,000 people at 50 venues in 2005-2009, we have prepared a new exhibition about Europe's largest land-based carnviore. "BEARS AND US" presents informative facts about bears in an entertaining format. The wealth of photographs is supplemented with a Powerpoint presentation, educational film and plaster casts of bear footprints. A series of attractive banners contain information on what bears eat, why they hibernate and what threats they face. Like its predecessor, an important aim of this exhibition is to explain how problems between bears and people can be reduced, by protecting beehives and crops and learning how to avoid the riskiest situations as well as what to do if we meet a bear. The exhibition can be seen at the Regional Cultural Centre in Prievidza until 30 March and then at Staré Hory school from 19 to 22 April. More...

Become a volunteer on The BEARS Project this summer! You will have the chance to study the ecology of bears as well as wolves in the wild. Fieldwork includes walks through forests and meadows in search of carnivore trails and collecting samples for analysis. You will receive training in how to do this. You will also help with another vital part of our work: educating the public. We are going to prepapre activities for this year's "Bear Days" event in the High Tatras, which will be held on 8-9 August. We will start at 9am on Monday 3 August. More...

Are you interested in the lives of carnivores living in our forests? Would you like to do something to help? We invite you to come along to a unique event in connection with voluntary work! Tracking carnivores in the field and the collection of samples for research await you. We will show you preventive measures we have implemented to reduce damage caused by bears and wolves with the aim of improving coexistence with local people. In the evening the programmme will be enriched with fantastic films about wolves and bears and, with a presentation on our projects, we will give you the chance not only to look deeper into our work but we will also discuss how you, too, can help. September-October 2008

On 28.9.2008 we will be presenting bear spray at the "Saint Hubert's Sunday" event at Pribylina's Museum of the Liptov Village. Beginning at 09.00, the programme includes competitions and live music as well as that old hunters' favourite, imitating the sound of rutting deer.

The Museum of Puppet Cultures and Toys, Modrý Kameň Castle, Modrý Kameň Hunting Association, the Slovak Hunting Union in Veľký Krtíš, the District Forestry Office in Veľký Krtíš, State Enterprise Forests of the Slovak Republic, Krupina, and the town of Modrý Kameň invite you to a cultural-entertainment event, "Hunting Days at Modrý Kameň Castle", to be held on 13 September. A rich programme awaits: you are invited to the opening of the exhibition "Meeting the Bear", go back to the Middle Ages with swordsmen, archers and falconers and experience a shoot-out between cowboys and Indians. Try the excellent goulash or other specialities together with a glass of fine wine, or enjoy traditional festivities in the castle grounds.

August 2008

30 and 31 August are "Bear Days" (Medvedie dni) at Hrebienok in the High Tatras. The programme from 09.00 until 16.00 includes: an exhibition on bears, film showing and discussion on the theme of bears in the Tatras, a bear theatre on the hour every hour, competitions, "bear services", sales of honey cakes. Have a look how a bear uses his senses, visit a bear den, paint your own T-shirt with bear tracks. Every child with a teddy bear receives a bear gift! State enterprise Forests of the Slovak Republic Banská Bystrica - Forestry and Timber Museum Zvolen - and the Slovak Wildlife Society invite you to the exhibition "Meeting the Bear". You can see the exhibition as part of the "Forest Days" programme in the museum at Nám. SNP 35 in Zvolene from 3 to 30 April 2008. Part of the exhibition will be a talk for primary and secondary schools at 13.00 and a presentation for university students at 15.00 on 23 April.

February-March 2008

From 16 February to 12 March we invite people in Revúca and surroundings to visit our exhibition "Meeting the Bear" which will be staged in the First Slovak Grammar Schoool musuem, Revúca. In connection with the exhibition there will also be a presentation about bears and wolves in Slovakia, which will take place in cooperation with Muránska planina National Park administration on Thursday 6 March 2008 at 18.00 in the Town Cultural Centre, Revúca. Besides the exhibition you will also be able to see the film "Staying Safe in Bear Country" and put questions to our zoologist.
