Volunteering

Like carnivores? Want to do something worthwhile?
Why not volunteer on The BEARS Project this summer!

What awaits you?

The project is based in the Tatra Mountains: a paradise of unspoilt countryside right at the heart of Europe. We work in and around the Low Tatras National Park and the Tatras National Park where, if you are lucky, you may see a bear, wolf or even lynx. There are also wild boar, red deer, pine martens, otters, golden eagles, chamois, marmots and many other species in this beautiful area.

You will have the chance to study the ecology of bears as well as wolves in the wild. Fieldwork includes walks through forests and meadows in search of carnivore trails and collecting samples for analysis. You will receive training in how to do this.

You will also be helping us with another vital part of our work: educating the public. Volunteers in 2008 worked with us to design a range of activities and games which they then presented at the "Bear Days" in the High Tatras. This fun event will be held again on 8th/9th August 2009.

We will show you some of the preventive measures we have been implementing to reduce conflicts between people and bears or wolves and explain how this will contribute to their long-term survival. There may be opportunities for you to assist with this activity. You will get most out of your stay if you are reasonably fit, independent-minded and flexible.

Where and when?

We are based near Liptovský Hrádok. If you do not have your own transport, we can pick you up from the train or bus stations (train and bus timetables). If coming by express/international train, change to a local connection in Liptovský Mikuláš. The nearest international airport is in Poprad, less than an hour from the project area.

In order for us to provide training and to prepare activities for the "Bear Days" event, we are asking volunteers to arrive in time to begin on Monday 3rd August and to stay at least one week.

How much does it cost?

Prices for 2009 are €120 for the first week and €80 for each additional week, with a 25% discount for students and those under 25. You can choose to stay at a local campsite or hostel or book from a variety of hotels, guesthouses and private rooms, according to your budget and preference.

Places for volunters are limited to a maximum of 8 and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. To reserve a place you need to send a deposit. Please email us for details and to confirm availability.
